Searching for Sequoyah: Filmmaking in Cherokee Country

Searching for Sequoyah spans two countries and three Cherokee nations and details the life and mysterious death of the Cherokee genius who invented a writing system for the Cherokee language. Chronicling his travels from east to west, the program recounts his final journey to Mexico where the aging genius hoped to reunite the "Mexican Cherokee" with the Cherokee nation after their removal to Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma. The film's co-producer, co-writer, and host Joshua Nelson, Associate Professor of English at the University of Oklahoma, will introduce the film and offer a Q&A following the screening.
