Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices in Zoonotic Risk in Wildlife: Cultural World-Views in Conservative Approaches
The KAP wildlife project, which is in its last stages of completion, aims to identify knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) towards the risk of zoonotic diseases, wildlife trade, and consumption in different populations living in urban and rural areas, including indigenous communities of Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Guatemala. Quantitative and qualitative methods were applied in 3057 KAP-questionnaires, 57 key actor interviews, and 24 focus group discussions. During round table discussions with multidisciplinary professionals and community representatives, problems and strategies for wildlife conservation and health programs were prioritized. Based on our findings, we are developing innovative, context-specific approaches to educate communities and co-construct behavioral change strategies aimed at raising awareness. This presentation will provide an overview of the project and its preliminary results, offering background on the challenges and the intricate relationship between biodiversity and zoonotic risk. Emphasizing the necessity of a holistic perspective, such as the One Health approach, the session will foster discussions on the cultural dimensions of zoonotic risks and the critical role of anthropology in this field. We invite participants to engage in a dialogue about integrating cultural insights into conservation and health initiatives to enhance their effectiveness and sustainability
