Eveline Dürr (LMU) & Martín Fonck (LMU):
Scales and Temporalities of Planetary Healing
In this presentation, we will explore the concept of “planetary healing” from a conceptual perspective, particularly focusing on the relationship between the planetary and healing through the lens of temporality and scaling practices. We will begin by contextualizing this discussion within the growing interest in “the planetary” in the social sciences and humanities. We will focus on the analytical distinctions between the concepts of reparation and healing. The idea of reparation relies on the assumption that there is a previous state to which we can return. Adopting this perspective enables exploring various reparation politics, the roles of the different actors involved, and the emerging connections, along with the associated memory and knowledge practices. On the other hand, the concept of healing presents a slightly different perspective. It is not merely about repairing something from the past; rather, it focuses on the conditions for the emergence of something new in response to a crisis. In this sense, healing is often connected to narratives, practices and stories of transformation and future-making. We will also explore this conceptual framing by addressing the methodological challenges of approaching “planetary healing,” drawing on examples from our fieldwork experiences.
