From 1910 to 1912, the “Second Freiburg Moluccas Expedition” traveled through the Dutch-colonized Maluku Islands (present-day Indonesia). The estate of ornithologist Erwin Stresemann, held in the LMU University Archives, documents this journey through diaries, letters, photographs, and artifacts. The exhibition illustrates how research and collecting took place during the expedition, the colonial context in which this occurred, and who supported the expedition on the ground—most notably Markus Mailopu from Seram. It also explores what the expedition means to us today.

The exhibition is a joint project of the LMU Munich University Library and the research project “Markus Mailopu and the II. Freiburg Moluccan Expedition” at the Institute of Ethnology at LMU Munich.
