Roundtable: Proximity and Distance in Field Relationships

The ethnographic method of long-term participant observation enables anthropologists to build relationships with local communities, forming friendships and even families. On the one hand, these relationships have granted anthropologists access to their research fields and opened up new possibilities for generating knowledge in collaboration with local research partners. On the other hand, such entanglements have complicated their role as anthropologists, particularly regarding their positionality, responsibility, and detachment from the field. In this roundtable, we will examine these tensions in relation to specific field encounters and reflect on their implications for the future of ethnographic research methods.
