Returning the Sacredness of Kihawahine

Poster Noelle KahanuIn the aftermath of the wildfires of Maui that have killed scores of people, destroyed thousands of homes and ravaged sacred places, calls for the return of Kihawahine have taken on a renewed sense of urgency. Many see the return of the famed water lizard deity, currently on display at the Humboldt Forum in Berlin, to be central to the restoration of fishponds and waterways that once enlivened Lahaina.

This talk will consider the ethical and humanitarian dimensions of such calls that move beyond considerations of mere provenance.
