Research Project: Weaponizing Hate: Understanding the Nature of Mediated Hate in Ethiopia.
Funding: Gerda Henkel Foundation - PhD Scholarship
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Magnus Treiber

Abstract:
The research seeks to understand the nature of hate messages expressed through Ethiopia's mainstream and social media platforms. Qualitative content analysis will be applied, and data will be collected from selected mainstream & online media platforms.

The research finding is expected to open a dialogue on how the nature of extreme hate messages among fellow citizens in general and against ethnic Tigrayans in particular in Ethiopia reinforced the ongoing 'genocidal' war.

Short Bio:

Woldegiorgis G. Teklay, an Ethiopian, has been a PhD student of media anthropology at the Ludwig- Maximilians-University of Munich (LMU) since 2022. He seeks to understand how hate is weaponized in the Ethiopian media ecology nexus of the ongoing war in the country.

With M.A. and B.A. degrees in journalism and communication, Woldegiorgis has a dozen years of combined experience in journalism practice, media and communication management, and teaching journalism courses.

He still contributes content to and helps manage the platform he founded (Yabele Media) in Kenya while staying there as an asylum seeker after leaving Ethiopia, escaping persecution as a journalist and ethnic profiling.
